My 2-ton unit is now extremely quiet these days. Don't buy the other kits as they do not work as advertised and may damage your unit.I bought two of these and the first one came in new condition and appeared to be factory first quality. All terminals checked for proper capacitance before install. Capacitor worked properly after install. Be advised these are large and you need a safe vertical place to mount it without touching any of the other exposed electrical parts. You may need to use some electrical tape to group the compressor assembly control wires away for the Hard Start module. There is no magnetic base.Second unit fully tested and functional with 2 dents, a crease, and a scratch. Obviously, factory second quality but functional. I gladly paid the $$ price for first quality and would have paid more for first quality. Price is not the main factor for safety! Buy safe products.Both units are functionally perfect and safe.Do not buy any other products as these work long term. The $19-$39 products are not safe in the long run. AC technicians are installing that cheap junk which could damage your compressor. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars American made the American way. I installed this to assist starting the outside compressor when using an emergency generator for power. The instructions make preparation and installation very simple.This unit is designed to work on all sizes of compressors up to 5 ton. Depending on the size you have to install a jumper wire so the capacity of this unit matches the requirements of your compressor. This comes with a property setup jumper for all sizes of compressors. If you decide to install this yourself be sure to disconnect all power to the compressor before installing and be aware that any other capacitor already installed in your unit can continue to retain some serious voltage (enough to put you in the hospital - or worse).Installation is a snap and the unit appears to function well. I'm able to start a 5 ton A/C unit with a 12,000 watt generator while also running all the 120V service in my house. There are some 240V circuits I have to leave off but being able to run my A/C was a main goal that this unit has helped me accomplish. Probably also makes compressor starts easier on my equipment but I can't prove it.Have tried foreign made units only to have them blow up after a few weeks. The foreign made garbage just isn't worth it. It's amazing how much better American made products are. But that's why we're Americans and the foreigners just make cheap stuff. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars This Cap may increase the life of your compressor, but not the way you might think. *by M***K on Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2024* After a lot of research I now realize I shouldn't have bought this Cap. That's not to say this device is bad in any way or that it doesn't do exactly what it's designed to do. Unfortunately, I was told by my HVAC guy that these Caps increased the life of my AC's compressor. I read that to mean it was good for them. So I bought it. Now I realize that's only half true. These 'hard start' caps boost the amount of current going into the compressor as means of goosing a tired and aging motor that sometimes won't start. So, instead of replacing the compressor you'll get a few more years out of it. Yep, so that's longer life, right? But, for my 3 year old compressor, a hard-start Cap is not only unnecessary, it's down-right harmful and will, theoretically, shorten its life. The extra juice this Cap provides at startup slightly strains the motor's windings due to the extra amperage, which shortens its life span.Instead, I should have purchased a 'soft-start' device that ramps-up the current in steps. The ramp-up process actually reduces the total current through the windings, which means less strain and a longer life. Soft-starts are ONLY for compressors that are NOT about to die. In other words, if you compressor sometimes won't start... you need to goose it with a hard-start Cap. For everyone else who wants to treat their compressor lovingly.... get a soft-start device.
