They prevent your kayak from oil canning like ratchet straps do to kayaks if strapped too tight. Camlocks can't be overtightened, so kayaks can't be damaged. These camlock straps are the safest thing to use to secure kayaks. They prevent your kayak from oil canning like ratchet straps do to kayaks if strapped too tight. These straps are great if you do not need to pull down super tight, but need them to stay snug. I have used these twice. On both occasions, the latches slip with only around 20 lbs of tension applied. This applies to the whole set, not just one individual strap. These things are not only useless, but dangerous if you use them to secure a load then they slip. UPDATE - when the strap is assembled according to the video, these work well. My mistake was using them the way they were assembled "out of the box."
