That was the safety lock so it doesn't close when cutting. Where the blade usually sits inside its housing, there's a diagonal piece of steel close to the blade. It has rigid texture in a little area. Push that piece of metal to he left toward the knife's clip. Then, carefully fold the blade in. Now to the light. Pull it back toward the sheriff logo, and it should stand up straight. Then, turn the flashlight's lens clockwise until it comes on,mans when your done, turn it counter-clockwise to turn it off. Similar mechanism to a mag-lite.
