It will function fine at 3 foot depth (that is not too deep for the pump). The filters are easy to clean and do not require replacement typically. They will last 3-4 months between cleanings but, of course, the time frame will depend on the conditions in the pond. I used it in a Koi pond, but there is some algae so the aerator clogs up very quickly.
