How to Install your Land To House Hydraulic Ram Pump Screen Intake and Drive Pipe The Drive Pipe (Not included) brings water from the source to the pump. This pipe can be PVC pipe or Poly pipe and should be between 20 and 100 feet long. The Drive pipe needs to match the pump size. A screen goes over the intake to prevent debris from getting to the pump. If you need a longer Drive Pipe to gain extra head pressure you can use a supply pipe and a standpipe. (Garden hose is not a good Drive Pipe material) Ram Pump Connection and start The Ram Pump needs to be connected to both the Drive Pipe and the Delivery pipe to work. Getting the Drive Pipe full of water and air free is often the most time consuming part of the install. Once water is getting to the pump it is time to press the Brass Waste valve to start the pump. This process can take 20 to 300 manual presses before the ram pump is cycling on its own. Water Has to fill the delivery pipe before the pump will start. Delivery Pipe The delivery pipe takes the water from the pump up hill to be stored or used. The delivery pipe can be any type or size pipe that you want. Garden hose, PVC pipe, and Poly Pipe are common pipe types. The size of the delivery pipe is often best when it matches the output valve of the ram pump, however any size pipe will work. The lift height of the delivery pipe determines the amount of water that can be pumped to the top. The higher the hill the less water will be delivered based on input head pressure. The physics of this simple device is really incredible. I had a problem with the waste valve not closing initially. Seth was very responsive to my inquiries, diagnosed the problem, and sent a replacement valve promptly. That is a good question. There's actually a better way. You can install a standpipe to allow you to move the water source closer to the pump yet keep the same head pressure.
